Trip Highlights:
Despite its diminutive size, Totnes manages to deliver surprising variety for visitors.
It's also well located for exploring the stunning landscapes of South Devon. To the South, regular bus services link up with the picturesque beach towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe, where you can paddle in crystal clear waters, or hike up the decidedly Mediterranean hillsides for an aerial view. To the north, the natural wilderness of Dartmoor is a 20 minute bus ride away.
Long a centre for those seeking a slower, more responsible lifestyle, the town centre has enough independent shops, local arts offerings and ethical eateries to rival most city centres. Wile away a sunny afternoon wandering the pretty streets, explore small galleries and museums, and retire to one of the many excellent pubs to enjoy a local pint or glass of wine.
A leisurely saunter along the River Dart takes you to the Sharpham estate, with its world-famous vineyard. Here you can enjoy a guided tasting of their fantastic vegan wines, or sample your own with accompanying notes. For cheese-fans, there's also a Sharpham dairy, whose produce pairs excellently with a tipple!
